Frederic Satellite Meal to be held - The community is invited to the Crawford County Commission on Aging’s Frederic Satellite Meal on Friday, September 14, at 12 p.m. at the Frederic Township Hall.  The lunch includes breaded skinless chicken breast, baked sweet potato, mixed vegetables, and applesauce. Lunch is open to the public. The cost of the lunch is a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and over and a $5 cost for those under 60. Munson Home Health will provide blood pressure and sugar checks and Bingo will be played following the meal. Call (989) 348-7123 for a reservation. Coffee hour for veterans to be held - The Crawford County Veteran’s Service Office will be hosting a coffee hour on the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting will take place at American Legion Post #106 on Thursday, September 13, from 9-10 a.m. Coffee, tea, and doughnuts will be provided free of charge. This is an event for veterans to meet and talk with each other. It will be a social setting with no formal speeches or agenda. All veterans are welcome. American Legion Auxiliary to meet - The American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion on Tuesday, September 11. The group meets once a month on the second Tuesday of each month.
DHHS assistance available - DHHS assistance appointments are available at the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center. An Eligibility Specialist from Crawford County Department of Health and Human Services will be at the Senior Center on Wednesday, September 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to take appointments. They will be available to meet with individuals to explain DHHS Assistance Programs, answer any questions you may have regarding eligibility requirements, case specific questions, and also take applications for assistance. Half hour appointments are available by calling (989) 348-7123. The Senior Center is located at 308 Lawndale Street.
Rep. Rendon to conduct local office hours - State Rep. Daire Rendon of Lake City will conduct local office hours for the month of September at Goodale’s Bakery on Friday, September 14, from 9-10 a.m. No appointments are necessary to attend office hours. Those who are unable to attend, but would still like to speak with the representative, may contact her Lansing office at (517) 373-3817 or
Senior Center to host Grandparent’s Day Dinner - The community is invited to attend a Grandparent’s Day Dinner at the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center, 308 Lawndale, on Thursday, September 13.  Dinner will be served from 4-6 p.m. Menu includes BBQ spare ribs, cheesy broccoli, tossed caesar salad, watermelon, and assorted desserts. The Annual COA Raffle Drawing will also take place after dinner at 6 p.m.  The meal is $5 per person for those under age 60 and a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 & over. American Legion Auxiliary to meet - The next gathering for the Kirtland Garden Club, a local group, will be held at the Houghton Lake Public Library on Monday, September 17, at 1 p.m. The guest speaker will be Sarah Rautio from the MSU Extension Service in Tawas City. Rautio manages several programs in health and horticulture, coordinates the Master Gardener Program in six counties, and works with a statewide team on many “Smart Gardening” initiatives. Rautio will be speaking about “Saving Plants Over the Winter and Putting the Garden to Bed.” A business meeting with light refreshments will follow the presentation. COA offers wildfire program - People living in areas where wildfires may occur can take steps to help lessen property destruction. The Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center is offering free property evaluations to Crawford County residents age 60 and older. A trained person will help you examine your home, outbuildings, and your surrounding property and make recommendations that you may take to help lessen the danger to them. ‘Superhero September’ event to held - North Central Area Credit Union will conduct “Superhero September” this month, collecting donations of cash and superhero-themed items like T-shirts, backpacks, and toys to help children who receive services at child abuse centers. The credit union’s Superhero September will be held in its branches in Grayling, Roscommon, and Houghton Lake all month. Donations will go to the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center of Roscommon.
