Restoration Advisory Board to meet - Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center is announcing a meeting of the recently formed Restoration Advisory Board (RAB). Meeting will be held on Monday, October 7, from 3-4:30 p.m. at Grayling Charter Township Offices (2090 Viking Way). This meeting will focus primarily on developing RAB meeting operating procedures and other administrative topics.
Senior Center to host Harvest Dinner - The community is invited to attend a Harvest Dinner at the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center on Thursday, October 10, from 4-6 p.m. Menu includes garlic roasted cornish hens, honey glazed carrots, wild rice with green onions, cranberry relish salad, and cherry cobbler. Door prize sponsor is The Sweet Life of Grayling. The suggested donation for those 60 years and older is $3.50 and for those under 60 the cost is $5.50 per person. The dinner is open to the public. Church to host Free Food Distribution - Mt. Hope Lutheran Church (905 N. I-75 Business Loop) will host a Free Food Distribution event for residents of Crawford County on Saturday, October 5, at 10 a.m. Event will include a hot dog lunch after the distribution. Dress for outdoor distribution and bring picture ID (driver’s license). Bring bags and boxes for your food.
Artisan Village to host concert - Dharma Records USA and Artisan Village will present in concert Jazzed Because on Thursday, October 10, from 7-9 p.m. The Artisan Village is located at 219 Michigan Avenue. League of Women Voters to meet - The League of Women Voters Crawford County Unit will meet on Thursday, October 10, at noon in the Nature Center (next to the American Legion). The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Adventure Pack available - The Crawford Health Improvement Committee and the Crawford County Commission on Aging and Senior Center are excited to announce that there is now an adult Adventure Pack available to check out of the Senior Center in Crawford County. The Adventure Pack Program includes 16 backpacks for youth and adults that can be checked out for free from locations across the county. The goal of the packs is to provide people with fun and useful resources to explore the outdoors. Each backpack comes with age-appropriate field guides for identifying plants, animals, and insects. Youth packs include nature bingo and supplies like binoculars, a bucket, and a bug viewer. Adult packs include hiking poles and a list of local places for easy access to the outdoors. You can check out packs for the day or the weekend. You must be at least 18 years old to complete the check-out/rental agreement. Winter Farm Market to start in October - A Winter Farm Market will be held in the Grayling Mini Mall on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in October, November, and December.
Coffee hour for veterans to be held - The Crawford County Veteran’s Service Office will be hosting a coffee hour on the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting will take place at the American Legion Post #106 in Grayling on October 10 from 9-10 a.m. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided free of charge. This is an event for veterans to meet and talk with each other. It will be held in a social setting with no formal speeches or agenda. American Legion Auxiliary to meet - The American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion on Tuesday, October 8. The group meets once a month on the second Tuesday of each month.
Garden Club to gather for luncheon - The Kirtland Garden Club, a local group, will gather at the Houghton Lake Public Library on October 21 at 1 p.m. for the Annual Meeting and Potluck Luncheon. Member participation and input is welcome regarding the 2019/2020 budget. The election of new officers, approval of this coming year’s budget, and filling of volunteering positions will be on the agenda. Members can call Nancy (422-6017) to RSVP and sign up for a salad to share at the luncheon. The Kirtland Garden Club meets monthly throughout the year on third Mondays to hear speakers on gardening topics, work on community beautification projects, and take planned trips.
Veterans can get ride to VA hospital - Veterans living in Crawford, Kalkaska, Roscommon, Otsego, or Ogemaw counties can arrange to be picked up along the I-75 corridor for a ride to the VA hospital by a Disabled American Veterans van. Call the Veterans Service Office at (989) 344-3861.
State rep to conduct local office hours - Rep. Daire Rendon of Lake City will conduct local office hours on Friday, October 4, from 9-10 a.m. at Goodale’s Bakery (500 Norway Street). Residents may also contact Rep. Rendon at her Lansing office at (517) 373-3817 or DaireRendon@house.mi.gov.
Medicare help available - The Annual Open Enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries begins October 15 and will continue through December 7. The Commission on Aging & Senior Center is providing free counseling services for Crawford County residents to enable beneficiaries to make the best possible decisions. A trained certified counselor will help you review your options and determine what is covered and what costs you will likely incur throughout the year. Appointments will begin October 21. Contact the Senior Center at (989) 348-7123 after October 7 to make an appointment.
