Improv night to be held at the AAV - “Gits and Shiggles,” an improv troupe directed by Chad Patterson, will take the stage at the AuSable Artisan Village on Saturday, October 13, at 7 p.m. Since the first performance in March, this act has been a crowd-pleaser. There will also be a new performance every second Thursday of the month. This is another free community event sponsored by Artisan Village (219 Michigan Avenue). Any donated proceeds go to a local charity.
State representative to conduct local office hours - State Rep. Daire Rendon of Lake City will sponsor local office hours for the month of October at Goodale’s Bakery, 500 Norway Street, on Friday, October 5, from 9 to 10 a.m. No appointments are necessary to attend office hours. Frederic Satellite Meal to be held - The community is invited to the Crawford County Commission on Aging’s Frederic Satellite Meal on Friday, October 12, at 12 p.m. at the Frederic Township Hall. The lunch includes cranberry chicken breast, peas and carrots, and an apple. Lunch is open to the public. The cost of the lunch is a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and over and a $5 cost for those under 60. Meet the school board candidates - The Crawford AuSable Federation of Teachers is hosting a meet the candidates night for the upcoming school board election. The event will take place at the Grayling Elementary School board room at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10. Public is welcome to attend. The six candidates running for the three available six-year seats on the Crawford AuSable School District Board will be participating in the event.
Coffee hour for veterans to be held - The Crawford County Veteran’s Service Office will be hosting a coffee hour on the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting will take place at American Legion Post #106 on Thursday, October 11, from 9-10 a.m. Coffee, tea, and doughnuts will be provided free of charge. This is an event for veterans to meet and talk with each other. It will be a social setting with no formal speeches or agenda. All veterans are welcome. Senior Center to host Tapping Workshop - The Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center invites you to a Tapping Workshop on Thursday, October 11, at 5:45 p.m. Tapping is a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern neuroscience that is effective in easing anxiety and pain, and changing negative thought patterns. Join Marian Long, RN, MSN as she explores the art and science of tapping, and how to use it for yourselves and others. Come early before the workshop for a shepherd’s pie dinner. American Legion Auxiliary to meet - The American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion on Tuesday, October 9. The group meets once a month on the second Tuesday of each month.
Oktoberfest to raise money for Animal Shelter - The AuSable Valley Animal Shelter will conduct Oktoberfest at Tinker’s Junction on Sunday, October 7, from 4-7 p.m. Dinner will feature brats, sauerkraut, potato salad, cole slaw, and dessert. Presentations to help senior plan for future - The Commission on Aging & Senior Center is hosting three presentations for older adults and their caregivers to help them plan for the future. October 11 the topic is Medicaid: Just in Case. Join Todd Balkema of the Jordan Balkema Law Firm in Gaylord as he discusses issues surrounding the potential need to plan for receiving Medicaid if a person needs to enter a nursing home or who will be the spouse still living at home. October 18 the topic is Will, Powers of Attorney, & Guardianship/Conservatorship. Local attorney Jason Thompson will go over the importance of each of these four things. October 25 the topic is Advance Directives. Join Steve Peterson of Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital as he will discuss the importance of having an advance directive. Medicare counseling available - The Annual Open Enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries begins October 15 and will continue through December 7. Prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans change every year. A trained certified counselor can help you review your options and determine what is covered and what costs you will likely incur throughout the year. This year, the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center is offering a new service. Residents of Beaver Creek, Frederic, Lovells, and South Branch townships will have the opportunity to have a counselor come to their township hall to review their plans (Maple Forest residents can choose either Frederic or Lovells).
