Holiday Open House to benefit local scouts
The Holiday Season Goodale’s Train/Village Open House will be held on Sunday, November 20, from noon to 4 p.m. at 1629 Industrial Street (M-72 East just past the overpass, on the left, follow the signs). Event will collect cash donations to benefit Scout Troop 979. (The “Briefs” item about this event in the November 10 edition of the Avalanche had the incorrect date.)
Cookie Walk to be held Saturday
Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church (400 E. Michigan Avenue) will conduct a Christmas Cookie Walk on Saturday, November 19, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Suggested donation is $6 to participate.
Christmas Walk Parade set for November 19
The Christmas Walk Light Parade will be held at 6 p.m. on Michigan Avenue on Saturday, November 19. At the end of the parade, a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will be held at the County Building. An application to participate in the parade is available online at
Local businesses to host Christmas Story Walk
The Christmas Story Walk from the Crawford County Library will offer two pages of “The Last Christmas Tree” by Stephen Krensky at 15 different local businesses on Saturday, November 19, as part of the Christmas Walk: AuSable Artisan Village, pages 1-2; Salon Rue, pages 3-4; White Pine and Petals, pages 5-6; Goodale’s Bakery, pages 7-8; North Country Corner, pages 9-10; AuSable Gifts, pages 11-12; Michigan Brew, pages 13-14; Crawford County Avalanche, pages 15-16; Grayling Eye Care, pages 17-18; Suchey Chiropractic, pages 19-20; Xpress Copy Center, pages 21-22; The Curator, pages 23-24; Main Branch Gallery, pages 25-26; Tip’n the Mitten, pages 27-28; Heart of the North Salon, pages 29-30. Breakfast with Santa event to be held
Project Graduation will be offering a Breakfast with Santa event at Gray Rock Pub & Grub from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 19.
Library to host book sale
A Used Cook Book And Craft Book Sale conducted by the Friends of the Crawford County Library will be held at the Devereaux Memorial Library (201 Plum Street) from November 14 through December 23, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Book sale is by donation (minimum $1 per book).
Grants available for youth projects/programs
The North Central Michigan Community Foundation Youth Advisory Councils are accepting grant applications for the 2023 grant cycle. The deadline for YAC grant applications is December 15, 2022. All nonprofit agencies with a 501(c)(3) IRS designation, schools, churches (for non-religious purposes), and government agencies serving the counties of Crawford, Ogemaw, and Oscoda are invited to apply for projects and programs benefiting area youth ages 18 and under. Applications are available at, where they may be completed online through the Foundation’s grants portal. Applicants may request up to $2,500 for projects serving Ogemaw County, and $1,000 for projects serving Crawford and Oscoda counties. Home Decorating Contest to start soon
The Grayling Promotional Association’s holiday “Light Up Your Life” Home Decorating Contest will be held next month. Applications (available now at the Festival of Trees, Grayling Mini Mall, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays until November 26, except for Thanksgiving) must be received by GPA by November 26. Applications can be dropped off at the Festival of Trees or mailed to: GPA, PO Box 150, Grayling, MI, 49738. No cost to enter. Must live in the City of Grayling or no further than five miles away from town. Homes must be decorated by December 9. Judging will take place December 9-10. There will be three prizes: 1st place, $100; 2nd place, $50; 3rd place, $50. Winners will be called on December 11.
Event to offer pictures with Santa
AuSable Artisan Village/Coffee by Steph will host Santa & Santa’s Wonderland from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, during the Christmas Walk. The event will include activities for children and pictures with Santa.
4-H invites area youth to Teen Fun Night
4-H invites teens from Roscommon and surrounding counties to attend 4-H Teen Fun Night at The Northern Center in Houghton Lake on Friday, November 18. Open to those ages 12-19, 4-H Teen Fun Night provides an opportunity for youth to have a fun night out, get a taco bar meal, meet some new friends, and learn a bit about the 4-H experience. (4-H membership is not required.) Event will include video games, basketball, board games, and cards. There will be multiple drawings for door prizes throughout the evening. Those who register in advance will receive an extra ticket for the door prize drawings. Registration for the first 50 youth is free. After the first 50 registrations, an at-the-door fee of $5 will be charged. Advance registration required: Parents of participating youth are invited to enjoy half off an appetizer at The Fox Den Restaurant.
