City zoning administrator to serve as interim city manager

Doug Baum, current city manager, to retire July 31, contract approved for Erich Podjaske to start as interim manager August 1
City of Grayling officials – following a special meeting of the city council on Monday, July 18 – signed a contract for Erich Podjaske to serve as interim city manager as Doug Baum, the current city manager, is set to retire at the end of the month.
On Monday, June 27, the Grayling City Council discussed the possibility of having Podjaske, the city’s current zoning administrator, serve as interim city manager as Baum prepares to retire.
According to approved minutes for the June 27 meeting, one council member said “continuity was important” and “appointing Erich Podjaske as the interim city manager position for eight months would give him enough time to see if it was what he wanted to do and get him through (the) budgeting cycle.”
During a regular council meeting on Monday, July 11, city officials discussed details of the contract, according to approved minutes.
Mayor Heather Forbes – after the meeting on July 18 – said adjustments to the contract based on the July 11 discussions had been made and the contract had been signed. Podjaske will start as interim city manager on August 1, Mayor Forbes said, and the specified term is eight months with a review scheduled at the halfway point.
Baum’s position with the city also included serving as police chief.
Todd Woods, Mackinaw City Chief of Police, representing the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, attended the July 18 special meeting to present a plaque to Baum in recognition of his service to the community and his contributions to the association.
“I recall the great enthusiasm and pride he took in representing Grayling,” Woods said.
Woods said Baum was highly “respected” and served with “good sense, good nature, good humor.”
Baum has already retired from the police chief position. Deputy Chief Amanda Clough is now the chief of the Grayling Police Department; she started her new role as chief in June.
