Winter Fun Days to feature weekend events in February

Last year, Grayling Recreation Authority tried something new with Winter Fun Days, its annual winter festival held at Hanson Hills Recreation Area, by spreading out its usual slate of events over the course of multiple weekends and adding new activities to the list, and this year’s Winter Fun Days will continue the expanded format.
Grayling Recreation Authority wanted to have more Winter Fun Days events and give more people an opportunity to participate in those activities, according to GRA officials.
“In the past we would try to hold multiple events on just one weekend. It was really tough to do,” said Justin Andre, Director of Operations for Grayling Recreation Authority.
Andre said Winter Fun Days organizers decided to add events to the festival, spread everything out, and use the whole month of February instead of just a couple of days.
The 2018 Winter Fun Days  event will start on Saturday, Feb. 3, with the Fat Tire Bike Race and the Grayling Youth Booster Club’s Blizzardfest.
The Fat Tire Bike Race, conducted by Fun Promotions LLC, will start at 10 a.m. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Visit funpromotions.com for more on the event.
Blizzardfest will feature free tubing – Hanson Hills has tubing runs with lifts – from 10 a.m. to noon. After that, the Booster Club will conduct a euchre tournament from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration fee for the tournament is $20.
On Sunday, Feb. 4, the Hanson Hills Race Team will conduct its final race of the 2018 season at noon.
The weekend of Feb. 10-11 will feature the Big Air Competition and the Chili Cook Off.
The Big Air Competition for skiers and snowboarders – presented by Rip-It Energy Drinks, Sylvester’s, and Paul Olson Municipal Underwriters – is slated to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The Chili Cook Off will be held from 12-3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11.
The Hanson Hills Classic cross country ski race will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Classic is a 14K race with a men’s division and a women’s division. It’s part of the Meijer State Games of Michigan.
Throughout February, Grayling Recreation Authority  is also offering a special deal for beginner skiers: $35 for a one-hour private lesson (includes lift ticket and rental skis). To sign up, contact Grayling Recreation Authority at (989) 348-9266 or stop by Hanson Hills, located on Old Lake Road.
“We’re excited for the weekend, for February Winter Fun Days,” Andre said. “Hopefully we’ll see everybody.”
