From the Desk of the Main Street Program Director

There are many ways to volunteer to help Main Street efforts
by Rae Gosling | Grayling Main Street Executive Director
The cornerstone of the Grayling Main Street (GMSt) program is community support.  The community built this program, they have sustained it, and they are a vital ingredient to its ongoing success.
As you may recall, last week I shared with you all the excellent training that GMSt volunteers and I attended in Pittsburgh. All that training means nothing if we do not have volunteers and Grayling champions to help us revitalize this community, from downtown to Fox Run or Hanson Hills.  This week, I want to talk about volunteering with our program and the value you can bring to Grayling’s growth.
There are many ways to volunteer with GMSt, and I would like to make it easy for you to try us out, and figure out if we are a good fit for you.
From home – do you like spending time on research projects, or reading about new (or familiar) topics? Do you enjoy creating from your couch?  We can use your help!  There are countless grants, ways to access capital, opportunities for fundraising, reports to read, and developers that we would like to make connection with.  We are always looking for folks to help us with research, and give us the highlights.  Right now, we are also looking for a few individuals to help create content for our Facebook page.  Currently, our VISTA member develops posts and a calendar for Facebook; unfortunately, her time with us ends in August and we need to start transitioning this fun job to a new volunteer.  You could also help create posters and invitation for our events, without ever leaving your house.
On the weekend, or in the evening – do you only have a few spare hours every now and then, and want something physical to do?  We can use your help!  GMSt is always looking for folks to be on call for events and projects.  Sometimes we need construction done, a few people to pour beer, put up tents, plant and water flowers, or clean up downtown.  Many of these projects are one-time commitments that do not require you to attend a meeting or take anything home.  You can show up, do some service for your community, and go home to rest when it’s all done.
Committee members – do you like working with a team to create an event or develop a program or training?  We can use your help!  GMSt has four core committees, and a board of volunteer leaders, as well as several sub-committees working on a WIDE range of projects.  Some teams are putting on events like Harvest Festival and Christmas Walk, while others plan design enhancements for our Main Street.  One GMSt team is working on attracting new businesses to our downtown.  If you like working as a group on a longer term project we would love to loop you into any one of our ongoing projects or events.  You could even develop a new idea for downtown, I bet there are others that would like your idea too.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to read about how you can be a part of the change in Downtown Grayling.  Volunteering creates a sense of place and builds pride and ownership in the community you serve.  All of us here at GMSt love this city, and we want you to love it also.
