2022 AuSable River Canoe Marathon champs post best sprint time

Fourteen of the top 15 teams during time trials also post top 15 finishes during the race
The winners of the 2022 Consumers Energy AuSable River Canoe Marathon – Steve Lajoie of Mirabel, Quebec and Guillaume Blais of Saint-Boniface, Quebec – also posted the best sprint of the 2022 Marathon time trials.
As usual, the time trials – a three-day event held on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, July 27, 28, and 29 – provided a good forecast of which teams would compete for the top spots during the AuSable Marathon and which teams would finish toward the bottom (or not at all). Fourteen of the top 15 teams at time trials also finished in the top 15 during the 120-mile Grayling to Oscoda AuSable River Canoe Marathon on Sunday.
Lajoie and Blais took first place in the Marathon and they had this year’s best sprint time, finishing the looped time trials course between Penrod’s and the Old AuSable Fly Shop in 4:53.32.
Wesley Dean and Ryan Halstead finished second in the Marathon and they had the third best sprint time (5:01.20).
Jorden Wakeley and Matt Meersman took third place in the Marathon and they had the fifth best time during sprints for position at 5:04.30.
Mike Davis and Ryan Zaveral had the second best sprint (4:59.28) and they finished fourth in the Marathon.
Logan Mynar and Kyle Mynar finished fifth in the race and fourth at sprints (5:01.59).
Daniel Medina and Colin Hunter took sixth in the Marathon and they posted the 10th best sprint time at 5:15.07.
Chris Issendorf and Brett Stockton finished seventh in both events, posting a sprint time of 5:11.71.
Carson Burmeister and Pete Mead placed eighth in the AuSable Marathon on Sunday and they had the 11th best sprint (5:15.68).
Patrick Madden and Adam Gelinas took ninth in the race; they posted the sixth best sprint time at 5:07.11.
Richard Lauth and Matt Gabriel, Jr. placed 10th in the Marathon after posting the 12th best sprint (5:18.20).
The 11th place AuSable Marathon team – Travis Mecklenburg and Austin Weiler – finished 13th in the sprints for position competition with a time of 5:21.64.
Weston Willoughby and Dane Trudgeon took 12th place in the Marathon after posting the 9th best sprint time (5:13.62).
Louis-Simon Pruneau and Christian Charette placed 13th in the Marathon; they had the 15th best sprint time (5:24.69).
Nick Walton and Clay Wyatt took 14th place during both races, posting a sprint time of 5:23.79.
The other top 15 team during time trials – Christophe Proulx and Kyle Stonehouse – did not finish the Marathon because of an injury. Proulx and Stonehouse finished eighth at time trials with a sprint of 5:13.39.
Of the nine slowest teams out of the 95 that competed in this year’s time trials event, only one of them finished the 2022 AuSable Marathon.
During sprints, all AuSable River Canoe Marathon teams paddled a looped course that started at Penrod’s, featured a turnaround buoy at the Old AuSable Fly Shop, and ended at Penrod’s.
Time trials determined starting positions for the AuSable River Canoe Marathon’s run-to-the-river start during which teams had to carry their canoes from the post office in Grayling to the water at the Old AuSable Fly Shop.
Weyerhaeuser was the Title Sponsor for this year’s time trials. Home Waters Real Estate was the Presenting Sponsor, Arauco was the Contributing Sponsor, and Penrod’s was the Site Sponsor.
