AuSable Marathon to induct two more paddlers into Hall of Fame

This year’s honorees include three-time champion Solomon Carrière and 20-time Marathon competitor Bruce Barton
The two inductees this year for the AuSable River Canoe Marathon Hall of Fame are Solomon Carrière of Cumberland House, Saskatchewan and Bruce Barton of Homer. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Oscoda High School at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, after the 2018 AuSable Marathon.
Carrière is a three-time AuSable Marathon champion (1984 with Butch Stockton, 1993 and 1994 with Serge Corbin). His teams set new course records in 1984 and 1994 for fastest finish time; the mark of 13:58:08 with Corbin in 1994 still stands as the best time in AuSable Marathon history, and it’s the only time a duo has reached the finish line at Oscoda in less than 14 hours (except in 1961 when the race was shortened).
Carrière has 15 AuSable Marathon starts and 11 finishes. He earned Iron Paddler status (10 Professional Division Marathon finishes) in 2008. He has nine top 10 finishes, eight of which were also top five placements.
“Sol began paddling as it was a way of life for the Cree people and a necessary means of travel in the community for the fur trade.  Community members began having competitions to see who was the fastest,” AuSable Marathon officials said. “Solomon’s wife, Renee, and son,  Réal Carrière, both are also active paddlers.”
Barton has 20 AuSable Marathon starts, 17 finishes, and he’s placed as high as second (1990 with Carrière, 1992 with Tim Triebold, and 1995 with Jeff Kolka). He reached Iron Paddler status in 2003.
“(Barton) was introduced to paddling by his parents, Mike and Kathy. Bruce has been paddling competitively for 50 years. He has not only raced canoes but was also on the Olympic Sprint Kayak Team in 1976 and 1980,” AuSable Marathon officials said. “Bruce, his wife Roxanne, and daughter, Rebecca Davis, are all active in the paddling community.”
Barton and Carrière have competed in the AuSable Marathon together a total of four times (1988, 1990, 1996, 2000).
