Five wrestlers place during Gaylord’s Northern Michigan Championships meet

There was a lot of great wrestling over the weekend. We took seven wrestlers to the JV tournament on Friday night and eight wrestlers to the (Northern Michigan Championships) on Saturday. Great tournament to be at. We saw a lot of teams that will be in our district. This was a good gauge of how we will do in the postseason.” – Andy Moore, Grayling High School Wrestling Coach
The varsity wrestling squad from Grayling High School competed in the Northern Michigan Championships meet at Gaylord High School on Saturday, and the Vikings placed eighth out of 29 teams.
Reece Ferrigan finished second in the 189-pound weight class. Max Halstead took second in the 125-pound division. Tyler Withers (215) placed third. Logan Joseph (152) placed sixth. Zach Kelly (heavyweight) finished sixth.
On Friday, as part of the event, Gaylord hosted a JV tournament.
For Grayling, Justin Bodkins and Felipe Escalante took second place. Gabe Ervin finished third.

“Reece and Max continue to lead this team on the mat, both wrestling tough all day. Tyler wrestled well, getting to the semifinals before losing and taking third. Logan wrestled well in a tough weight class.  He almost upset the number one seed in the second round.  Zach Kelly continues to wrestle well this season.  Heavyweight was loaded with good wrestlers. Both of his losses came to wrestlers that aren’t in our division,” Coach Moore said.
“Friday night was a good tournament to give some of our guys some mat time they needed. All seven of our guys got four matches with Justin and Felipe taking second and Gabe taking third,” Coach Moore said.
The Vikings will compete in the Lake Michigan Conference championship meet at Kalkaska on Saturday, Feb. 4.
