Grayling posts two wins, one loss during home wrestling meet

Vikings defeat Farwell and Roscommon but fall to Rogers City during four-team meet on Saturday

The varsity wrestling team from Grayling High School hosted another four-team meet on Saturday, February 27, and the Vikings won two out of their three series, defeating Farwell and Roscommon and losing by three points to Rogers City.
Grayling started its day with a match vs. the Rogers City Hurons.
Hunter Strohaver (140) and Tucker Mertes (145) won for the Vikings by default. Rogers City won by pin at 152. Neither squad had a wrestler at 160.
The Hurons scored pins at 171, 189, and 215. Logan Malonen won by decision for GHS at heavyweight. Rogers City won by pin at 103; it was the last contested match of the series. Joe Armstrong (112), Kylie Berringer (119), Katelyn Moore (130), and Jesse Vandecasteele (135) won by default for the Vikings. Both teams forfeited at 125.
Rogers City won 42-39.
Grayling then wrestled against Farwell.
Mertes won a 6-4 decision at 145. Farwell won by pin at 171 and 189.
At 215, Yeng Xiong pinned his Farwell counterpart in the second round. Malonen won by pin in the first round in the heavyweight bout.
Caleb Baker (103), Armstrong (112), Berringer (119), and Moore (130) all won by default for Grayling. Farwell won by pin at 135. Strohaver won by default at 140. Neither squad had a competitor at 160 or 125.
The Vikings won 45-24.
Grayling ended its day with a match vs. the Roscommon Bucks. The series started with a double void at 152. At 160, Roscommon won by pin in the third round. The Bucks scored first round pins at 171 and 189.
Xiong (215), Malonen (heavyweight), Baker (103), and Berringer (112) won by default for Grayling. Armstrong (119) won by tech fall, 19-4. Both squads forfeited at 125. Moore (130) and Vandecasteele (135) won by default. There was a double void at 140. Roscommon won by pin at 145 in the last bout of the series.
Grayling won 41-30.
“We started slow against Rogers City. We rebounded well against Farwell and Roscommon,” Coach Andy Moore said. “We’re a work in progress. We’re getting there.”
On Wednesday, the Vikings wrestled at Mancelona.
Grayling defeated Traverse City St. Francis 42-33 during the meet but lost to Mancelona (54-30) and Gaylord (42-40).
During the event, Armstrong posted his 100th career win by pinning his Mancelona counterpart. Coach Moore said Armstrong is a “hard worker” and it was good to see him reach the milestone.
“Joe getting his 100th win was exciting,” Coach Moore said. “Really happy for the success he’s got.”
The Vikings will wrestle at Cadillac on Saturday, March 6.
