K of C conducts local, district rounds of annual free throw contest
The local Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship event on Sunday, Jan. 29, had 11 winners, and those 11 shooters advanced to the district level of the competition.
The Free Throw Championship was open to boys and girls ages 9-14.
The nine-year-old age division winners were Jillian Hartman (girls) and Corbin Allen (boys). Ten-year-old winners were Lillian Odden (girls) and Tanner Paulus (boys). In the 11-year-old bracket, Krista Harrington was the girls’ champion and Ethan Kucharek was the boys’ winner.
Joslynn Sheldon (girls) and Peyton Scheer (boys) were the winners in the 12-year-old division. The 13-year-old division champions were Kayleigh Paulus (girls) and Douglas Phillips (boys).
Logan Collet was the boys’ champion in the 14-year-old bracket. No 14-year-old girls competed.
The Grayling Knights of Columbus conducted the Free Throw Championship event at the Grayling Middle School Jan. 29. During the event, each contestant shot 15 consecutive free throws.
After the main event, all 11 winners had the opportunity to compete in a best overall free throw contest called “The Billie Nielson Shoot Off.” Kucharek, as the winner, will have his name engraved on the Championship Plaque. Kucharek survived a speed round and three elimination rounds to win the honor, event organizers said.
The K of C conducted the district round of its Free Throw Championship on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Grayling Middle School, and seven local shooters placed high enough to advance to the regional round: (girls) Odden, Sheldon; (boys) Allen, T. Paulus, Scheer, Phillips, Collet.
The regional contest is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Grayling Middle School.
