Nine local shooters advance to district level of Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships
Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 competed in the local level of the annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship on Sunday at the Grayling Middle School, and nine of those shooters will advance to the upcoming district level competition.
The winners from Sunday’s K of C Free Throw Championship event: Leah Kirmo, 9-year-old girls; Joda Smock, 9-year-old boys; Katy Hayden, 10-year-old girls; Ali Helinski, 11-year-old girls; Cameron Baker, 11-year-old boys; Madison Demeere, 12-year-old girls; Dominik Demeere, 12-year-old boys; Ethan Kucharek, 13-year-old boys; Ann Hayden, 14-year-old girls.
Three age groups did not have shooters.
After the main competition, Kucharek won the Billy Nielson Shootout.
The nine local winners will advance to the district competition, which will be held on Sunday, February 10, at 1 p.m. at the Grayling Middle School gym.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, regional, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus international headquarters based on scores from the state level competitions. All boys and girls 9 to 14 years old are eligible to participate.
