Hanson Hills Recreation Area and Fun Promotions LLC hosted the Hanson Hills Fat Bike Race – an event sponsored by Cheboygan Brewing Co – on Saturday, February 6, and 30 riders competed, according to race results. The event was part of the Meijer State Games of Michigan sports series.
Brent Walk of Fun Promotions LLC said overall numbers were a little low.
“I think people are just getting back in the swing of starting to come out to do events again,” Walk said. “Everybody’s happy to be here; they’re going to have a great time. The weather plays a part in it too. Weather’s a little sketchy traveling.”
Walk said the course at Hanson Hills for the fat bike race included groomed cross country ski trails and they were in great shape for the event.
“It’s such a great course here. This is by far the best fat bike course in the state,” Walk said. “For them to open up the cross country ski trails is a really great blessing. It really gives these riders a chance to ride three or four abreast out there all along the course. They can pass practically anywhere. Makes it fun.”
“Having a chance to use a facility and use trails like this just makes for a great course,” Walk said.
According to results provided by Fun Promotions LLC, Jorden Wakeley won the Expert Men Division with a time of 1:27:32. Paul Olson won the Expert 40 Plus Division with a time of 1:39:27. Andrea Cherwinski was the only competitor in the Expert Women Division and she won with a time of 2:32:01. Alan Pinon won the Open Men Division (1:02:32) and Emily Booms won the Open Women Division (1:22:50). Rusty Naimo won the Masters 45 Plus Division (0:58:12).
Expert classes completed two laps on the course and Open classes completed one lap. According to race organizers, each lap was approximately 10 miles.
