Varsity ski team begins 2019 season with Lake Michigan Conference meet at Boyne Mountain on Thursday night
Grayling High School’s varsity ski team opened its 2019 season with a Lake Michigan Conference meet on Thursday night at Boyne Mountain.
Grayling’s top three girls all finished in the top 12 during the slalom event and they posted top 14 scores in giant slalom.
“I’m happy with the girls. Their job all season is to leave no space between the gas pedal and the floor, and to do that without mistake. They had a good start to it last night by putting three results in the top 15 in both events,” Coach Brad Wagner said.
Results for the Grayling girls included: (slalom) 9th, CeCe Cvitkovich, 1:35.67; 10th, Nicole Oppermann, 1:36.03; 12th, Ellie Wagner, 1:43.17; 18th, Maria Beceiro, 2:28.19; (giant slalom) 11th, CeCe Cvitkovich, 1:06.80; 12th, Nicole Oppermann, 1:07.90; 14th, Ellie Wagner, 1:09.70; 23rd, Maria Beceiro, 1:33.65; 25th, Maria Gonzalez, 1:44.61.
The Vikings had three top 20 finishes during the boys’ competition.
Overall results for Grayling’s boys on Thursday night included: (giant slalom) 16th, Anthony Fisher, 1:06.09; 19th, Devin O’Dell, 1:07.53; 24th, Desmond O’Reilly, 1:12.25; 36th, Logan Sims, 1:21.09; 38th, Jesus Jimenez, 1:22.13; 40th, Brayden Whitley, 1:25.68; 42nd, Trevor Kline-Johnson, 1:35.95; (slalom) 19th, Desmond O’Reilly, 1:51.95; 21st, Anthony Fisher, 1:52.92; 26th, Brayden Whitley, 1:59.95; 33rd, Devin O’Dell, 2:13.66; 38th, Philipp Pfundstein, 3:02.03.
“The dudes struggled in slalom but skied (giant slalom) well. The struggles are common for early season and the mistakes made are signs of the fellas pushing their limits. It’s a good crew and I’m pretty stoked with their first showing,” Coach Wagner said.
Grayling’s scheduled season opener – a meet at Boyne Highlands slated for Monday, January 7 – was cancelled.
Next week, the Vikings will ski at Nub’s Nob on Thursday, January 24.
