The Grayling High School wrestling team defeated Sault Ste. Marie but lost to Petoskey during Wednesday’s meet at GHS, the first matches of the 2018-2019 season for the Vikings. The meet also featured Oscoda.
First, Grayling wrestled against the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils.
In the first weight class of the series, Sault Ste. Marie won a 12-10 decision.
Logan Joseph (189), Justin Bodkins (215), and Nick Bluemlein (heavyweight) all won for Grayling with first round pins.
Kylie Berringer (103), Joe Armstrong (112), Zach Duncan (119), and Thomas May (125) all won by default.
Grayling led 42-3 with five weight classes remaining.
At 130, Nick Green won a 5-2 decision for the Vikings. At 135, Tucker Mertes was trailing 5-0 but rallied for a third round pin. The Vikings had a 51-3 lead.
Grayling forfeited at 140. Sault Ste. Marie won by pin at 145.
Max Halstead (152) won by default. Neither squad had a wrestler at 160, the last weight class of the series.
The final score was Grayling 57, Sault Ste. Marie 15.
Next, Oscoda defeated Sault Ste. Marie by a final score of 54-23.
In the third series of the evening, Petoskey won 56-21 vs. Oscoda.
In the final match-up of the night, the Grayling Vikings battled the Petoskey Northmen.
In the first bout – the heavyweight division – Petoskey won by pin. Berringer (103) won by default. Armstrong (112) won by pin in the first round vs. his Petoskey counterpart. At 119, Duncan won a 3-0 decision. May (125) pinned his opponent with three seconds remaining in the first round.
Grayling, after five of 14 weight classes, led 21-6.
The Northmen won by pin at 130. The Vikings forfeited at 135. Petoskey scored pins at 140 and 145, giving the Northmen a 30-21 advantage.
At 152, Halstead won 5-0 by decision. Grayling forfeited at 160. Petoskey won by pin at 171. Joseph (189) won a 12-8 decision. The Northmen won by pin at 215, ending the series.
Petoskey won 48-27.
“The first one against Sault Ste. Marie, that was better than I expected. We wrestled well. Even the kids who didn’t win wrestled well,” Coach Andy Moore said.
Coach Moore said the team’s three consecutive pins by Joseph, Bodkins, and Bluemlein early in the Sault Ste. Marie series helped boost the squad.
“They set the tone good there with those pins,” Coach Moore said.
Coach Moore said a couple of his wrestlers offered to move up a weight class to help the team during the Sault Ste. Marie series, including Green, who won 5-2 in his bout vs. the Blue Devils.
The Vikings knew it was going to be a challenge vs. Petoskey. Again, a couple of starters moved up weight classes in an effort to help the squad.
“At 103 and 112, Joe and Zach begged me to bump up a weight to wrestle those guys,” Coach Moore said.
“Against Petoskey we needed things to go a little different. It was a two-match swing, really,” Coach Moore said. “We’re a young group, still learning. We’re a little banged up.”
The wrestling team will host an individual tournament at Grayling High School on Saturday, December 15, at 9 a.m.
