Board of Commissioners approves resolution to support local businesses

The Crawford County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a “Supporting Local Businesses” resolution during its regular meeting on Thursday, February 25, to provide awareness to the public and other government officials of the economic hardships businesses are facing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In late January, during the county board’s previous regular meeting, District #2  Commissioner Sharon Priebe asked if the county should write and approve a resolution “to support local business” similar to what other counties have done, to let businesses know “we’re here for you, we’re fighting for you, we’re doing whatever we can.”
Other commissioners supported the idea, and said the resolution should be sent to other governments in the state in addition to being made available to the public. The board voted unanimously during its January 28 meeting to have county officials draft the resolution for approval.
On February 25, the Crawford County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the wording of the resolution (with one board member absent).
Excerpts from the “Supporting Local Businesses” resolution: “WHEREAS, the Crawford County Board of Commissioners recognizes that COVID-19 is having direct impacts on all County residents, impacts which include, but are not limited to, physical and mental health care difficulties, eductional constraints and financial strains; and WHEREAS, the Crawford County Board of Commissioners understands that many local businesses have suffered and continue to suffer economic harm due to COVID-19; and WHEREAS the Crawford County Board of Commissioners furthermore recognizes that the local hospitality industry is being hit particularly hard with financial losses due to COVID-19; and WHEREAS the Crawford County Board of Commissioners believes that the ability of county residents and visitors to patronize local restaurants, hotels, recreation venues, etc., contributes substantially to the overall well-being of the County; and WHEREAS the Crawford County Board of Commissioners is aware of many options to support Crawford County small businesses, such as ordering takeout food, making advance reservations and purchasing gifts cards; and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, The Crawford County Board of Commissioners encourages county residents to support local businesses at all times, but particularly during this global pandemic.”
The language of the resolution also states that the document will be “sent to all counties in Michigan, the Michigan Association of Counties, Representative Daire Rendon, Senator Curt VanderWall and Governor Gretchen Whitmer.”
