City council approves laundromat zoning amendment

Change involves the 300 block of Michigan Avenue in Central Business District
The Grayling City Council – during a regular meeting on Monday, September 12 – approved a zoning ordinance amendment that will allow laundromats in another part of the city.
In July, according to approved council meeting minutes, city officials said “Rick Rawlings was looking to rezone the old Keyport Building to put in a laundromat. It was currently going to Planning Commission and then would be coming to City Council. It would be a zoning amendment only for the 300 block of Michigan Avenue.”
The City of Grayling Planning Commission advertised for a public hearing on the proposed Central Business District zoning amendment and conducted the hearing on August 16. The public hearing did not feature any comments. Later in the August 16 Planning Commission meeting, the board voted 4-0 to recommend the amendment to the Grayling City Council.
The city council scheduled a special meeting for Monday, August 22, and then later postponed it until Monday, August 29. The city ended up cancelling the August 29 special meeting.
On Monday, September 12, during a regular meeting of the city council, the council voted 3-1 (one member absent) to approve the Central Business District zoning amendment.
At the end of the meeting, Rawlings thanked the council for approving the amendment and said he hopes to have the Keyport Building laundromat functioning in two to four months.
During an interview later in the week, City Manager Erich Podjaske said the Keyport Building has been vacant for many years and having a laundromat in that area will give people the opportunity to walk to restaurants and businesses downtown while waiting for laundry. Podjaske said some people are opposed to having a laundromat in the Central Business District, but he thinks it will be a good addition to the community.
“I see it being a positive,” Podjaske said.
