The abbreviated 2020 fall football regular season is over for Michigan teams, and all varsity squads that opted to play – including Grayling High School – have been slotted into the Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason football tournament, which starts this week.
The Vikings of Grayling High School (3-3) are in Division 6, Region 21, District 42 along with Kalkaska (0-5), Manistee (4-2), Benzie Central (2-4), Elk Rapids (1-5), Maple City Glen Lake (4-2), Mason County Central (2-4), and Boyne City (4-2) for the 2020 MHSAA football playoffs.
The Vikings will host a familiar foe – the Benzie Central Huskies – for their District 42 playoff game slated for 7 p.m. on Friday, October 30.
Grayling and Benzie Central are both in the Northern Michigan Football Conference Legends Division and the two teams played against each other this year on Friday, October 2, at Viking Stadium. The Huskies won 41-28. The score was tied at halftime, 14-14, and it was also a tie game at 21-21 early in the third period, but Benzie Central pulled away late.
Although Benzie Central won the head-to-head regular season match-up this year, the Vikings had a better overall record (3-3 compared to 2-4), and Grayling had a better playoff point ranking, 26.667 to 23.667. The edge in the playoff point number earned Grayling the opportunity to host Friday’s rematch.
“Now it’s win or go home,” Coach Eric Tunney said. “I’m excited to watch these guys get back to work and turn them loose again Friday night vs. Benzie.”
According to the MHSAA, playoff tickets will be sold online this year due to COVID-19.
“All playoff tickets will be sold online only via GoFan at https://gofan.co/ to provide for a cashless and contactless purchasing process that also allows for contact tracing. Tickets for single-session pre-district, district, and regional games are $6. A per-ticket convenience fee will be applied,” according to the MHSAA.
Grayling High School’s Athletic Department said “tickets will not be released to the general public until Wednesday night” on October 28. The department said it will release the link for ticket purchases on the Grayling High School Facebook page.
